Simon Says can be a very useful way to reinforce new vocabulary while also upping the energy. That’s why it’s a great choice either at the beginning or in the middle of a class and this can be a very effective way to teach English online to Chinese students.

The obvious way to use Simon Says is to reinforce a vocabulary lesson involving body parts. But what you might not think of is using Simon Says to reinforce the use of action words, like “dance,” “jump” or “clap.”

Always be sure to introduce the words you plan to use in lesson format before introducing the game. Students can always assume they understand what you’re saying, particularly if they’re following the rest of the group. That’s why it’s important to use Simon Says at the end of a lesson and to make sure that you’re not giving them any hints with your own body language as to what they’re supposed to do; let the ESL lesson be their guide!

Labeling

In an English online teaching job, Labeling can be a great way to remember new vocabulary. We already discussed a bit how labeling can be used during an art project, but you can also use labeling in a classroom or with photographs.

If you’re trying to teach the names of different things in the classroom, tasking your students with creating labels for them can be a great way to get them up and moving—and speaking! Once the labels are created, be sure to laminate them. You can use them with all sorts of games, from treasure hunts to interactive matching or memory games.

You can also use labeling with photographs, particularly if you can project them on the wall. Find photographs or images of different scenes containing vocabulary that you have covered in class. Make the labels yourself or have your students make them, and then allow students to come up and affix them on the projected image, either using magnets or putty, depending on what’s appropriate for your classroom.

Labeling of this kind is great when used in tandem with an art project, as students first identify items as a group and are then encouraged to label things on their own.

One tidbit of advice that I gave to my students when I was teaching in Myanmar was to make sure that they spent a lot of time thinking in English. If I expected them to really put my advice into practice, I had to specifically give them examples of ways in which they could incorporate this into their daily life.

These products will also allow you to adequately supervise, assess and advise them along the way.

Reading teachers understand that reading as much as possible is a major key to improving reading fluency. This is also true for gaining reading fluency in another language. Unfortunately, not all students will have access to English books at their level, and others will need assistance in choosing books that are appropriate for their specific reading levels and interests.

Effective utilization of library is one way to make sure your students have access to an adequate amount of reading materials for at-home reading practice. Accessing virtual libraries like Open Library and Lit2Go is another option to consider, especially if your resources are limited.

Limiting Teacher Talking Time

As a teacher of English teacher jobs online, you probably know all the research regarding decreasing TTT and ensuring that student talking time is maximized. The research behind this is substantial, to say the least, and I dare not attempt to touch on all of it here. However, I do want to point out that the more opportunities you give your students to speak in class, the more likely it is that they’ll be using the language as often as possible outside of the classroom.

By maximizing student talking time, you’re demonstrating to your students that they have an active role to play in the conversation and English learning as a whole. With that idea instilled in them, they’re more likely to play a more active role in learning the language outside of your classroom.

Make your classroom speaking and listening experiences as authentic as possible

Some experts wholeheartedly believe that, when it comes to language learning, the words “classroom” and “authentic” are incompatible. This is probably true in many situations. However, in a teach English jobs online, I do think that it’s possible to strategically incorporate authentic speaking and listening time into your lessons and meet your learning objectives at the same time.

The key to this is pretty simple: build opportunities for your students to talk about things that interest them. This will show them that you’re interested in what they have to say and what they like. Maintain a positive and encouraging atmosphere for these experiences to take place and don’t be afraid to get off track (you can always get back on track later). After all, the overall goal isn’t for the students to learn scripts or how to answer questions correctly. We want them to ultimately be comfortable with spontaneous, authentic communication. The way to get there is to practice spontaneous, authentic communication!

These few points can go a long way in impacting your kids with the basic English language skills they require by keeping their minds open and with the desire of practicing on their own.

Studies show that over 80% of language learning students have misconceptions about what it takes to actually learn a second language. Unfortunately, those misconceptions usually translate to ineffective learning strategies.

For instance, as a teacher who teaches English online from home, some of your students believe that learning a new language simply entails acquiring a large amount of new vocabulary in the target language. Because of this, they focus their practice time on learning new words and are unaware that vocabulary acquisition is an ineffective learning strategy all on its own. 3# Wake up 30 minutes before your first class to make sure everything is working properly including headset, audio, and video.

4# Perform all updates the night before teaching  (or on off days) and get it out of the way to give your operating system enough time to adapt to new nodes.

5# Have a backup Internet plan such as a mobile hotspot in case unexpected issues arise.

Focus on Individual Needs

Choose those skills that are the most important for him or her, and tailor your instruction accordingly. While Student A may be struggling with learning the alphabet and initial sounds, Student B might be reading at a fourth-grade level. I’m sure you get the point. Challenge all of your students with the material at their own level to ensure language progress. My own teaching mantra is, “All learners can learn if we know how to teach them.” The onus is on you as a teacher. That is the unique skill you have to offer.

Provide High-Interest Engagement

We all learn more when we are engaged. Think of times when learning was the most enjoyable for you. Try to emulate those teaching styles. Was it how the teacher interacted with the class and how you were treated with respect, fairness, patience, and acceptance? Maybe the teacher planned lessons that involved more than just passive learning. Perhaps there were learning activities with movement, which allowed for maintaining the students’ attention levels and increasing their classroom participation. Did you have a creative teacher who used a variety of materials like flashcards, games, magazine and newspaper articles, pictures, photos, field trips, projects, technology, role plays, guest speakers, simulations or question-and-answer sessions? Did they mix it up when it came to working individually and in small groups or whole-class instruction? Did they allow choice in student learning and ask for input as far as needs and interests?

Model

How you talk in your lessons, when both focusing on instruction and relating with your students, will increase their language ability. Speak slowly and clearly so that the ESL student will understand when you teach ESL online. Choose words that are easier for them to grasp. Use visuals whenever possible so that students can also read the directions at the same time. Teaching with two or more modalities heightens understanding and learning. Offer repetition and review until your students have mastery. Those who have already obtained a master’s degree in ESL may have the upper hand, but TESL students and the vast majority of other teachers have limited knowledge of how to work with English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, also called English Language Learners (ELLs). At some point in their career, almost all teachers will have a student whose native language is not English. Engaging with ELLs does not have to be an uphill battle — in fact, it should be an enriching experience for the teacher, the ESL learner, and the rest of the class.

As with all teaching, doing the few extra steps to prepare engaging lessons, by injecting your own personal experiences and incorporating those of your students — will do wonders to interest your students in the curriculum. Do presentations on their culture’s history, food, and background, and encourage the students to formulate their own demonstrations. Correct errors with compassion.

Your ESL students will make mistakes, and you should let them. After all, teaching ESL online jobs is really tasking, so we learn best through making mistakes. And if you’re interrupting your students to correct them every five words, they’re going to get frustrated, lose their train of thought, and feel attacked. Give your students time to think and respond, and let them realize they’ve made a mistake and try to correct it themselves. Be adaptable, but maintain high expectations.

Adapt the amount of time for completing a task; adapt the amount of scaffolding; adapt the task (for example, by allowing the use of a dictionary or simplified instructions); and adapt the type of response such as permitting drawings, a verbal response, or a translated response. Students want to respond to their teachers’ high expectations positively, so if you foster a positive classroom environment while maintaining your high (and realistic) expectations, your students will rise to the challenge.

Encourage students to speak in their native language.

Some teachers teaching ESL online jobs always make the mistake of telling their ESL students that their native tongue is not allowed in the classroom. But maintaining and developing this native language actually, helps their acquisition of academic English. According to a 1995 study by Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas, dual language models of schooling have a substantial effect on student progress, “enhancing student outcomes and fully closing the achievement gap in the second language.” Support of the primary language is therefore critical to helping your students succeed both in your class and in the years to follow, and ideally, instruction occurs bilingually — that is, the “curricular mainstream [is] taught through two languages.”

Seek resources.

When you need advice or ideas, or if you simply want a sounding board, seek assistance from full-time ESL teachers or even general teachers who are bilingual themselves. Identify and recruit volunteers from your personal and professional life, or any of these ESL and TESOL Twitter accounts who speak the students’ language. Administrators can even work with community leaders who are involved in community development with immigrant families.

These few tips are some of the best ways you can easily engage and motivate kids to partake fully in an ever demanding online ESL jobs.
