Can You Get Paid to Teach English Online?

For many people, teaching English is more than just a job: it’s all about creating a career path. Learning English is a major part of the working world today, and is one of the main reasons why people invest in working in Western nations. As one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world, being able to speak English puts you in pretty significant demand. With that in mind, then, it might surprise you that more people don’t invest time and effort into being an English tutor.

That is because put simply, the competition has become so excessively vast that the days of being able to get a ‘normal’ teaching job are quite slim. With so many people looking to work in public and private sector education, the avenues and opportunities that many people once thrived off of are gone. This is a major issue, and one of the main reasons why people are choosing to look to English teacher jobs online.

What puts most people off, though, is the pay. Surely you can earn more money when you are working as a paid English teacher as a contractor or a direct hire. However, that isn’t always the case, in fact. Most people can actually find an equally, if not more, secure way of paying the bills by using online teaching avenues to make it so. Most people can find that, with the wealth of people who would rather learn at their own pace rather than invest in a full-time course, that people are out there.

Also, one of the main reasons why the English teacher jobs online have exploded is due to the kind of student. You aren’t going to be teaching young kids who it can be harder to determine their progress. Instead, you are teaching adults – students, professionals, that kind of thing. It allows you to be more methodical and a touch more adult in the coaching and thus make sure that they are learning at a pace that is both suitable and effective.

Being able to teach English online is very liberating from the tutors’ viewpoint, too. You can easily make sure that you are seeing genuine progress and understanding of where your students are at. You can build a better rapport with them which is vital for making sure that you can get a clear and cohesive strategy from your students.

All of this is exceptionally important in making sure you can have a clear and consistent message being put forward. By working with us, we help to make sure that you can see a more progressive and enjoyable level of progress, helping you to really stretch beyond where you are at present. If you are a tutor who feels like you are struggling to get through to your students, then consider going for any job teaching English online.

It can be liberating, financially rewarding and even more secure in a world where standard forms of education are beginning to fall behind.

Finding The Best Online ESL Teaching Job

When it comes to engaging with the world of English teacher jobs online, you might find it tough to get the right kind of job for you. Any kind of ESL teaching jobs is going to be about helping you make a positive and lasting impact on the life of the person who you are helping to learn the language. Being able to become an online ESL lecturer should almost certainly be one of your first ports of call if you are looking for a more inventive way to make a living.

Not only does engaging with English teacher jobs online make it much easier for you to find roles that you can really enjoy being a part of, but it helps you to work with students who care. One of the most harmful and galling parts of being an English teacher online is watching people have no real interest or care for the role that you offer. That can be quite disheartening, and it can be tough to want to keep teaching when you notice that nobody seems to be too interested.

With ESL teaching jobs, you are working with people who absolutely need to learn. They are very much the easiest way for you to engage with a student base who is passionate about succeeding. Due to this, they will do everything that you need to learn about the role and what that means for them in general.

However, instead of trying to work with them for a few moments out of an hourly class of 20+ students, you work together. They work with you on a regular basis to build a platform that is going to help them grow, improve and strengthen their overall understanding of English in general.

English is all about making sure you can get all the help and assistance that you need to see genuine progression and improvement in life. Therefore, students are going to be committed to learning, especially since they can learn from home.

You don’t need them to come into a classroom after hours of being in classrooms or working. Now, they are more attentive as they are here to learn with you, making it much easier for you to see the genuine progression in each and every student that you choose to hire.

This, in time, will make a stellar difference to your overall happiness and confidence when teaching. When you see that they have a genuine interest in learning with you, it makes it easier to work through the hard days.

The reward? Seeing them complete the course and become fluent in English. It’s all about helping to make sure other people can see progress. If you’re worried that even the best jobs don’t compare to ‘normal’ teaching, think again.

Happy Teaching!

HOW TO USE ESL ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS IN AN ENGLISH TEACHING JOB ONLINE

oekaki-2009817_1920

Attention spans in beginner classes, no matter the age group, tend to be reduced. After all, it’s hard to ask someone who barely understands what you’re talking about to follow an in-depth discussion about anything, even if it is of interest to them!

But for children, this is even truer. A child has a reduced attention span even in his or her own language; teaching children English, therefore, must be done with attention to this fact.

For an English online teaching job, children should generally not be asked to do an activity for any longer than 20 minutes, so if we imagine that some schools have classes that last between 45 and 60 minutes, each activity would be about a third or up to half of a class period. Often, however, an activity will take up much less time than this.

Be sure that you are organized in your lesson in order to make the most of your time when doing these activities, and never expect an activity to take up an entire class and you can even use these strategies to teach English online to Chinese students.

Art Projects

Art is a fantastic way to get your young students excited and interested in a variety of lessons to reinforce different vocabulary.

The art project that goes with this lesson should either come at the end of the class or at the beginning of the following class after a brief review of the vocabulary. Students can draw pictures independently, but you should walk around the room and encourage them to talk to you about their work.

Let’s say you’re using an art lesson to follow up an acquisition of different color words; you could ask students what color they’re using the phrase “What color is this?”

The same sort of lesson can be used once students become more advanced with other sorts of vocabulary, from fruits to careers to animals, by having students draw pictures using the vocabulary that was introduced in class and then helping them to label their drawings using the words they learned.

English teacher job online might be tasking, so you need to get some ideas for more art projects to reinforce vocabulary from Art Projects for Kids, a teacher-approved site filled with resources and ideas. We also love these fun ideas from the Artful Parent, craft ideas from Enchanted Learning and the themed crafts from Funology.

Active Games

You probably already witnessed the awesome power of kinesthetic learning in the classroom, and active games can be a great way to get beginners up and moving.

Simon Says can be a very useful way to reinforce new vocabulary while also upping the energy. That’s why it’s a great choice either at the beginning or in the middle of a class and this can be a very effective way to teach English online to Chinese students.

The obvious way to use Simon Says is to reinforce a vocabulary lesson involving body parts. But what you might not think of is using Simon Says to reinforce the use of action words, like “dance,” “jump” or “clap.”

Always be sure to introduce the words you plan to use in lesson format before introducing the game. Students can always assume they understand what you’re saying, particularly if they’re following the rest of the group. That’s why it’s important to use Simon Says at the end of a lesson and to make sure that you’re not giving them any hints with your own body language as to what they’re supposed to do; let the ESL lesson be their guide!

Labeling

In an English online teaching job, Labeling can be a great way to remember new vocabulary. We already discussed a bit how labeling can be used during an art project, but you can also use labeling in a classroom or with photographs.

If you’re trying to teach the names of different things in the classroom, tasking your students with creating labels for them can be a great way to get them up and moving—and speaking! Once the labels are created, be sure to laminate them. You can use them with all sorts of games, from treasure hunts to interactive matching or memory games.

You can also use labeling with photographs, particularly if you can project them on the wall. Find photographs or images of different scenes containing vocabulary that you have covered in class. Make the labels yourself or have your students make them, and then allow students to come up and affix them on the projected image, either using magnets or putty, depending on what’s appropriate for your classroom.

Labeling of this kind is great when used in tandem with an art project, as students first identify items as a group and are then encouraged to label things on their own.

EXPLICIT IDEAS ON STRATEGIES USED IN A GET PAID TO TEACH ENGLISH ONLINE

bar-1835514_1920

As teachers of English teacher jobs online, we often assume that our students have a basic understanding of English learning strategies. Because of this, we may give students general guidelines and strategies instead of being explicit and providing much-needed examples. Remember that your students don’t have the training or pedagogical background that you do, nor have they spent countless hours studying language acquisition.

One tidbit of advice that I gave to my students when I was teaching in Myanmar was to make sure that they spent a lot of time thinking in English. But in a get paid to teach English online jobs, that advice in and of itself might not enough because these students are still kids. If I expected them to really put my advice into practice, I had to specifically give them examples of ways in which they could incorporate this into their daily life.

Below are some of the tangible ways that can ensure that your students will be thinking of English outside of the classroom.

Set up English speaking peer groups

We know that in a teach English jobs online, in order to learn a language, students have to practice speaking to others in authentic situations. Setting up peer groups is one fun way to facilitate and encourage this. Just as content area teachers assign group projects pertaining to their content area, ESL teachers can assign group projects with the goal of increasing the amount of time students spend in meaningful communication outside of class. I would pick specific locations for them to meet like the coffee house, restaurant, or the local park. This was they were naturally exposed to different situations to use English.

As with any group project, you should be purposeful in how students are grouped in order to achieve the maximum benefit. Also, there should be some sort of final product — as well as several smaller ones along the way — to give students the opportunity to demonstrate what they’re doing and learning. These products will also allow you to adequately supervise, assess and advise them along the way.

Effective Utilization of library

Reading teachers understand that reading as much as possible is a major key to improving reading fluency. This is also true for gaining reading fluency in another language. Unfortunately, not all students will have access to English books at their level, and others will need assistance in choosing books that are appropriate for their specific reading levels and interests.

Effective utilization of library is one way to make sure your students have access to an adequate amount of reading materials for at-home reading practice. Accessing virtual libraries like Open Library and Lit2Go is another option to consider, especially if your resources are limited.

Limiting Teacher Talking Time

As a teacher of English teacher jobs online, you probably know all the research regarding decreasing TTT and ensuring that student talking time is maximized. The research behind this is substantial, to say the least, and I dare not attempt to touch on all of it here. However, I do want to point out that the more opportunities you give your students to speak in class, the more likely it is that they’ll be using the language as often as possible outside of the classroom.

By maximizing student talking time, you’re demonstrating to your students that they have an active role to play in the conversation and English learning as a whole. With that idea instilled in them, they’re more likely to play a more active role in learning the language outside of your classroom.

Make your classroom speaking and listening experiences as authentic as possible

Some experts wholeheartedly believe that, when it comes to language learning, the words “classroom” and “authentic” are incompatible. This is probably true in many situations. However, in a teach English jobs online, I do think that it’s possible to strategically incorporate authentic speaking and listening time into your lessons and meet your learning objectives at the same time.

The key to this is pretty simple: build opportunities for your students to talk about things that interest them. This will show them that you’re interested in what they have to say and what they like. Maintain a positive and encouraging atmosphere for these experiences to take place and don’t be afraid to get off track (you can always get back on track later). After all, the overall goal isn’t for the students to learn scripts or how to answer questions correctly. We want them to ultimately be comfortable with spontaneous, authentic communication. The way to get there is to practice spontaneous, authentic communication!

These few points can go a long way in impacting your kids with the basic English language skills they require by keeping their minds open and with the desire of practicing on their own.
