As teachers of a home based online teaching jobs, we tend to concentrate on how we can help students in a class, but we oftentimes neglect to give them the tools to continue learning the language when they leave the classroom.

This is unfortunate because, for many students, the majority of their practice time happens at home and within their communities. Even as teachers of an ESL job online, we can’t argue about the importance of teaching our students strategies they can use to maximize their learning opportunities outside of class.

This was the basis for this foolproof teaching strategy. They hone in on the intersection of classroom teaching and outside study, and can make a huge difference in your students’ attitudes towards learning.

Get yourself in the right mindset

As teachers, we can’t assume that students know how to practice effectively or even see the importance of doing so. From that point on, I began seeing myself not only as a teacher but as an English learning advisor as well!

When you want to teach English online from home, you have to create a holistic English learning experience which extends beyond the classroom and into every corner of your students’ lives. This outlook certainly changed the way I approached teaching, and ultimately helped many of my students to take their English speaking and listening abilities to the next level.

Create in-class strategies that effectively translate into outside practice.

Sure, our primary responsibility is classroom instruction. Most of us have no interest in following our students everywhere they go. It’s useful to focus on in-class strategies and ideas that simultaneously benefit students outside the classroom.

Although some of these ideas may seem obvious to us as teachers, we have to be explicit about teaching them to our students. As you incorporate the following 8 ideas on the list, remember to make no assumptions about your students’ basic knowledge of language acquisition. Remember, they aren’t professionals. YOU are!

Take the time to teach students basic principles in second language acquisition.

Studies show that over 80% of language learning students have misconceptions about what it takes to actually learn a second language. Unfortunately, those misconceptions usually translate to ineffective learning strategies.

For instance, as a teacher who teaches English online from home, some of your students believe that learning a new language simply entails acquiring a large amount of new vocabulary in the target language. Because of this, they focus their practice time on learning new words and are unaware that vocabulary acquisition is an ineffective learning strategy all on its own. While they need not be experts, equipping your students with a basic understanding of the process of learning English will ensure that their practice time is effective and grounded in sound language learning practices.

Use technology to garner motivation and student interest

Research clearly indicates that motivation is a huge factor in a student’s ability to learn a second language. I mean, that’s just common sense, right? Some students may come to your class intrinsically motivated and require very little from you to build interest. Others will require a large degree of extrinsic motivation, and you may need to be creative to find out what excites them.

To teach esl online, you need to make your job easier, experts have identified common motivating factors that generally apply to different age groups. For instance, tweens and teens may be motivated by the prospect of socializing with English speaking peers, while adults may be motivated by the prospect of acquiring a new job. Whatever the motivation, today’s technology has a vast variety of resources and tools to build on that interest.

Set realistic expectations and goals, early and regularly.

One of the largest factors in Mayda’s frustration was her unrealistic expectation of how long it would take her to learn to speak English fluently. Simply examining those expectations and re-establishing her short and long term goals did wonders for her self-confidence.

After my experience with Mayda, goal-setting is now an integral part of my time spent with beginning students. ONLINE ENGLISH TEACHING JOBS HOME BASED AND KEEPING STUDENTS ENGAGED

Everyone has something to say some time or another. ESL learners are no different. As a teacher of either online English or classroom ESL instruction in an ESL job online or elsewhere, it is important to make your students feel comfortable speaking. When you teach English online from home, your students may feel embarrassed about their inability to speak English fluently. Or perhaps they are just shy. As an instructor in an online English teaching jobs homes based, you need to ask yourself how you are impacting the learning environment:

  • Are the students afraid to make mistakes?
  • Is your instruction on their level?
  • Do you state clear instructions with examples?
  • Do your lessons incorporate exciting material and ways to teach?
  • Are your students motivated and interested to learn?

After you ask yourself these questions and alter your teaching based on honest self-evaluation, you can incorporate more ways to encourage your students to learn English.

Build Fluency

The most important thing to remember is that your students need to be speaking English as much as possible. The more they practice, the better they speak. The better they speak, the more confidence they will gain. And this cycle will continue to build fluency. As you teach English online from home, don’t make the grammar lessons the focal point of your instruction. Don’t do too much teacher talk and lengthy explanations. Choral responses where the students recite the same “response” — whether it be a word, phrase, sentence or dialogue — are an effective tool to build vocabulary skills that lead to comprehension. This method helps to build success for all learners. So get your students to talk, and keep them talking!

Focus on Individual Needs

With the current educational journals consumed with such topics as Differentiated Education, Meeting the Needs of All Learners, Maximizing the Disconnect Between the Real World and the Classroom, etc., it is important that you, too, focus on each student. Choose those skills that are the most important for him or her, and tailor your instruction accordingly. While Student A may be struggling with learning the alphabet and initial sounds, Student B might be reading at a fourth-grade level. I’m sure you get the point. Challenge all of your students with the material at their own level to ensure language progress. My own teaching mantra is, “All learners can learn if we know how to teach them.” The onus is on you as a teacher. That is the unique skill you have to offer.

Provide High-Interest Engagement

We all learn more when we are engaged. Think of times when learning was the most enjoyable for you. Try to emulate those teaching styles. Was it how the teacher interacted with the class and how you were treated with respect, fairness, patience, and acceptance? Maybe the teacher planned lessons that involved more than just passive learning. Perhaps there were learning activities with movement, which allowed for maintaining the students’ attention levels and increasing their classroom participation. Did you have a creative teacher who used a variety of materials like flashcards, games, magazine and newspaper articles, pictures, photos, field trips, projects, technology, role plays, guest speakers, simulations or question-and-answer sessions? Did they mix it up when it came to working individually and in small groups or whole-class instruction? Did they allow choice in student learning and ask for input as far as needs and interests?

Model

How you talk in your lessons, when both focusing on instruction and relating with your students, will increase their language ability. Speak slowly and clearly so that the ESL student will understand when you teach ESL online. Choose words that are easier for them to grasp. Use visuals whenever possible so that students can also read the directions at the same time. Teaching with two or more modalities heightens understanding and learning. Offer repetition and review until your students have mastery. When dealing with kids in an online English teaching jobs home based, always be positive toward them, and continue to praise them for speaking to encourage more speaking. Develop a strong, open and caring relationship toward each of your students, and in turn they will strive to be the best students possible. I guarantee you will have a more successful classroom of ESL students.

Allow Time

Learning a language is developmental. There are endless factors in acquiring a language, so it is important that you put this in perspective. When you talk to a student, allow wait time for the response. When they struggle with a certain skill or concept, help them over this hurdle. Everyone learns in different ways, and once you embrace this idea, you and your students will be more apt to enjoy the learning process together.

These are indeed some vital strategies that can easily motivate children and allows them to get engaged with their studies when you teach ESL online.

BASIC IDEAS THAT LEAD TO A SUCCESSFUL ESL JOB ONLINE

In a conversation based, online ESL lesson, the focus is usually on building confidence in order to promote the student to speak. Due to the form factor of the virtual classroom, there is also a lot of empty space on the student’s screen that presents a great opportunity for screen sharing lesson content. Workbooks, exercise sheets, and class homework are not great tools to increase energy levels during an online lesson (nor are they ideal for screen sharing).

Those who have already obtained a master’s degree in ESL may have the upper hand, but TESL students and the vast majority of other teachers have limited knowledge of how to work with English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, also called English Language Learners (ELLs). At some point in their career, almost all teachers will have a student whose native language is not English. Engaging with ELLs does not have to be an uphill battle — in fact, it should be an enriching experience for the teacher, the ESL learner, and the rest of the class.

As with all teaching, doing the few extra steps to prepare engaging lessons, by injecting your own personal experiences and incorporating those of your students — will do wonders to interest your students in the curriculum. You can also draw inspiration from and use these teaching resources and tools. Says one teacher, “Teaching ESL is about 1/3 knowing the ins and outs of the English language, 1/3 being a good communicator, and 1/3 being a good actor. You really need to be excited doing this job.” These ideas can easily create a wonderful environment for motivating ESL learners and elevating the educational and cultural environment for every kid involved.

Create a cultural dialogue.

With regards to an online ESL job, this suggestion tops our list because it is offered by every teacher who has worked with ESL students in an online ESL job. Learning in an English-speaking classroom doesn’t mean force-feeding American patriotism. It must be a two-way street. Create an environment that embraces your students’ own cultures and backgrounds. Show a real interest. Ask the students to teach you phrases in their own language, especially positive phrases like “Good job,” and use these phrases interchangeably with their English counterparts. Do presentations on their culture’s history, food, and background, and encourage the students to formulate their own demonstrations. Invite the parents into the classroom, even if they don’t speak English, to participate and get to know the entire class. This approach helps teach all your students that having a family that speaks another language is something to be celebrated.

Correct errors with compassion.

Your ESL students will make mistakes, and you should let them. After all, teaching ESL online jobs is really tasking, so we learn best through making mistakes. And if you’re interrupting your students to correct them every five words, they’re going to get frustrated, lose their train of thought, and feel attacked. Give your students time to think and respond, and let them realize they’ve made a mistake and try to correct it themselves. Everyone has opinions, and everyone wants the floor to speak them occasionally. Give them the space they need to formulate ideas.

Be adaptable, but maintain high expectations.

A challenge like learning in a new setting is just that: a challenge. It doesn’t mean you should lower your expectations or give out A’s for effort. Outline realistic benchmarks and assessments, and take into account the students’ needs for time, support, difficulty, and product. Adapt the amount of time for completing a task; adapt the amount of scaffolding; adapt the task (for example, by allowing the use of a dictionary or simplified instructions); and adapt the type of response such as permitting drawings, a verbal response, or a translated response. Students want to respond to their teachers’ high expectations positively, so if you foster a positive classroom environment while maintaining your high (and realistic) expectations, your students will rise to the challenge.

Encourage students to speak in their native language.

Some teachers teaching ESL online jobs always make the mistake of telling their ESL students that their native tongue is not allowed in the classroom. But maintaining and developing this native language actually, helps their acquisition of academic English. According to a 1995 study by Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas, dual language models of schooling have a substantial effect on student progress, “enhancing student outcomes and fully closing the achievement gap in the second language.” Support of the primary language is therefore critical to helping your students succeed both in your class and in the years to follow, and ideally, instruction occurs bilingually — that is, the “curricular mainstream [is] taught through two languages.”

Seek resources.

When you need advice or ideas, or if you simply want a sounding board, seek assistance from full-time ESL teachers or even general teachers who are bilingual themselves. Identify and recruit volunteers from your personal and professional life, or any of these ESL and TESOL Twitter accounts who speak the students’ language. Administrators can even work with community leaders who are involved in community development with immigrant families.

These few tips are some of the best ways you can easily engage and motivate kids to partake fully in an ever demanding online ESL jobs.

Teaching ESL Online Jobs and Effective ways to Teach Kids

The traditional class of nine-to twelve-year-olds was always having trouble organizing itself into neatly lined up teams for the next activity. I had already given them flags denoting the names of their teams and had written the team names on the board. When one team finally managed to form a line, I burst out, “Look at the Orange team! What a nice line! You get a point!” The chalk mark on the board riveted the attention of the other teams. “And you’re quiet. One more point!”

In seconds, the other two teams magically lined up and stood at attention like soldiers. “Wow, look at the Purple and Green teams! You all get one point! And everyone is so quiet. One more point!” Everyone was energized and focused before we even started the game.

Teachers in an online ESL job bring to the classroom their personal visions of what education and relationships between people should be, and rules can be one way of communicating these expectations and values between teachers and students. Clarity, consistency, and commitment to help ensure that the communication is effective while having a variety of strategies for implementing (or enforcing) rules can help students come to believe in those values and expectations as well.

In an online ESL job, students’ response to the rule and/or its follow-up should be respected as one way in which they are communicating with you, and the time and effort you spend in working to understand their language(s) will definitely be worthwhile.

Engage with your students’ special occasions and interests.

On a related note, in an online ESL job, many American teachers develop special activities for holidays— Halloween, Passover, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and so forth — as well as American pastimes — baseball, and lemonade stands. Ask your students to share their own holidays and interests, and incorporate these ideas into your classroom. One of the best ways to get a child or adult talking is to ask them about their personal life. Whipping out a handout that includes something that relates meaningfully to their lives will strengthen their interest in the classroom community and the material itself.

Use scaffolding techniques to help students accomplish tasks.

Scaffolding is the support given during the learning process that is tailored to the needs of your students. Since ESL learners generally need a new kind of support, it can be helpful to think of scaffolding as divided into three categories:

  1. Verbal scaffolding: slowing speech, enunciating words, paraphrasing, rephrasing, using “think-aloud,” etc.;
  2. Procedural scaffolding: one-on-one teaching, coaching, modeling, small-group instruction, partnering, and pairing; and
  3. Instructional scaffolding: use of pictures, regalia, graphs, graphic organizers, audio-visual aids, and so forth.

Being aware of how you use these tools in the classroom can help you better plan for the needs of your students. Eventually, the goal is for the student to figure out the task at hand on their own and no longer need the additional support.

Maximize inter-student interaction.

Cooperative learning is proven to be effective for ESL learners. Students see the teacher as the authority figure. Getting them to speak in front of you or in front of the whole online group class can be difficult, but they usually feel more comfortable interacting with their peers. Ask your students to teach one another simple playground games if you’re teaching a group online class, like tag or foursquare. For an online ESL job, you could even have the class interact with and help each other use some of these apps for learning English as a means to facilitate conversation, learn, and have fun. When planning group or pairing activities, design different groupings depending on the needs and purposes of the lesson. This interaction gives the ESL students a chance to practice English in a less threatening setting. Although they shouldn’t feel threatened at all because you should always.

Motivating kids in an online ESL class can be tasking and be demanding, nevertheless, these few methods can help you to properly motivate kids in an online ESL class.

MOTIVATING FACTORS FOR KIDS IN AN ONLINE ESL JOBS

Teaching should be as fun as it is rewarding, and this experience brings comfort to your online ESL jobs online and right into the comfort of your own home.

Being an online teacher has never been this easy, you get connected with young kids, and provide all the lesson material so that you can spend more time doing what you love but this might be demanding when the kids aren’t motivated to learn.

Here are some of the most effective ways of motivating children in an ESL. I would like to add a few more points.

Drama and role play- especially if the costumes and props are involved.

Using a ball to pass around, or an egg timer to turn even the most dreary grammar drills into games or “competitions”.

Doing a project that raises awareness of other children around the world- email pals, video conferencing, exchanging art or photos with another class of same-aged kids on another continent, etc. How about a “Gift from China” box of little things that the kids make and/or collect along with English explanations of each that the kids prepare to exchange with another group?

From an ESL job online you can take photos in class and use Polaroids on occasion for instant gratification and classroom fun- especially nice when the kids are working in groups. I did a project with Chinese 2nd graders (summer visitors to the US), where each got a disposable camera to document their visit. The first two weeks they took pictures. The second two weeks they created a book with text.

Give kids some “power” and choices. Let the kids take attendance, call the class to order, dismiss the class, sometimes chose between lesson alternatives, etc. Make it an honor to be chosen to “help the teacher”, by giving them a badge for the day, or putting their name in a special frame for the day. Some of the kids were much stricter than I would have been! (Doesn’t work after around 8 years old!)

Be audible and clear while speaking

Due to the complex nature of teaching ESL online jobs,  It may seem obvious, but it is important to ensure your students understand what is expected of them. At the start of each activity, go over both the content and the language objectives; with both children and adults, these objectives can be simple and straightforward. At the end of the lesson, review the objectives to ensure they’ve understood everything. One teacher even suggests recording snippets of your class for your own review. He says, “It’s amazing how many times you’ll find yourself saying words that are natural to you, but might throw off the students (think about how many times you say ‘ya know,’ ‘like,’ ‘well, ya see,’ ‘the thing is,’ so kind of extra words with no meaning.” Recording yourself to make sure you’re being crisp, concise, and to the point.

Use hands-on and project-based activities

This is actually applicable to all teachers in all disciplines: Students like hands-on and project-based activities and effective teachers use them to help their students engage in learning through exploration. Hands-on activities generally include scaffolding components, and project-based activities often incorporate the students’ own interests and cultural backgrounds. There’s no need to stick to a monotone reading of the textbook. Think outside the mold with the goal of experimental fun. One teacher suggests an activity that involves setting up a “marketplace” in the classroom and asking students to buy, sell, and trade different items. This hits a few key objectives, including inter-student interaction and the practical art of negotiation. A number of teachers suggest using music in the classroom — sing pop songs together, create songs for vocabulary lists, and so forth. If you play an instrument yourself, by all means, bring it into the classroom!

By applying these few methods while coaching kids in an online ESL class, due to the tasking nature of teaching ESL online jobs, I believe you should begin to see some motivation in the kids.
