My VIPKID Teacher Journey Teaching English Online to Chinese Students

IMG_5123

As an Online ESL Teacher, it is vital to have a detailed daily schedule. It is very important to try and figure out how to balance life and the craziness of teaching English online from home with VIPKID. It is so easy to get pulled into doing extra projects for your Online ESL Job and before you know it you’re exhausted and burn out. At one point last year I didn’t leave my house for 7 weeks. It took me almost a year and a half to get a structured schedule that balances work and family.

When I hit around the 7-month mark, my ESL teaching job with VIPKID became an obsession. At that point, I had refined my teaching in the classroom to fit what VIPKID wanted. I had an excellent system in the classroom that my students loved and it made for a relaxed and stress-free class. I soon realized that I needed to focus on only doing things that would build up my student base.

I became a VIPKID Open Class teacher which is teaching a 25-minute class to around 100-500 students. It is more like a performance than an online ESL class. By doing this it reduced the gaps in my schedule. I loved teaching it! It was a nice change of pace. I taught 2-3 of them each month.

Next, I did an audio of a bedtime story that was sent out to the student base. This was viewed by over 4,000 parents. At that point, I was only working on company projects that would put me in front of the parents and students. This was helping but I still wasn’t happy with the ups and downs of my schedule.

So now we have the Summer rush coming June, July, August. I was determined to put as many hours in that I could to build up my student base. It wasn’t easy and it isn’t for the faint of heart. Here is how many classes I taught each month and my final payment for the Summer Rush:

June 2016: 702 classes taught: $7,000

July 2016: 788 classes taught: $9,112 (Big Summer Bonus Program)

August 2016: 741 classes taught: $7,803

I worked by butt off and it really paid off financially for my family. Parents were starting to complain that it was hard to book my classes. That is what I was looking for to have parents waiting to book my classes. Here is what some parents say about my classes:

“No wonder to become a star teacher, the class language fun, pronunciation and intonation ups, and downs, to attract children’s attention. Pay attention to correct the pronunciation of children in time, and make targeted guidance after class evaluation. Children with the teacher relaxed and happy, fruitful. Real good teacher!”

“Finally got the girl love the teacher, the class vivid and lively. Comments are also put forward according to their own, very pertinent, will always be on the Daniel class.”

“JASON very much like DANIEL teacher, but the teacher’s class is too difficult to make an appointment. The teacher is very relaxed, children can relax, these days the children cough very fierce, but still need to insist on the teacher’s class, teacher DANIEL is very courteous and accessible, class atmosphere is also very good, can continue to encourage children. At the end of the class time, the teacher and children chat, expand the contents of some textbooks. In short, I and the children are like you, looking forward to meeting with you every week, thank you!”

The final incentive that really hit home for me was Winning the Trip to Beijing. I really wanted to win the trip because that would put me in front of the parents and students. I won the trip to Beijing with VIPKID and it was one of the best company experiences that I have ever had. It gave me an insight about the company and a better overall understanding of the market.

So why am I telling you this?

VIPKID has over 10,000 teachers now. You need to take advantage of anything that puts you in front of the parents and students. You need to go outside your comfort zone and sometimes push your self a little harder if you want to make working online with VIPKID or other online ESL schools.

The Times are Changing, Jobs and Careers are Changing Too! But the Knight in shinning Armor is Teaching ESL Online from Home

43b76f487ac996b81f517c36e3b8ba78c1e2cb067f95ccb951pimgpsh_fullsize_distr

By David C. Douglas

“The times are a changin’” wrote Bob Dylan the Nobel Prize winning poet / song writer musician back in 1964. The simple truth of these words seemingly rings truer today for nearly everything in life; be it rapid technological advancements to the altered neo-geo political landscape, to erosion of social norms and morality, even mutual respect and common courtesy has degraded and the list continues on-and-on but not least-of-all is the, too often, devastating to many, changes taking place in the job market, employ-ability, careers and career stability.

Back in 1964, as Dylan wrote the words: “times are a changin’” most people in the United States and much of the world could count on finding a career or job skill that would last a lifetime. Entrepreneurship and small business start-ups were generally much simpler, fewer regulatory requirements were demanded and initial start-up cost were much less while the prospects for long-term success as a result of those risk and efforts taken, though not assured, were much more likely at that time than in today’s topsy-turvy vigorously changing world.

Due to industrialization of the third world countries in order to exploit cheaper labor markets (especially developing countries like China, México and India) by multinationals corporations and the implementation of so-called, fictitiously named and drastically under enforced, Free Trade Agreements many industries in Developed Nations have suffered greatly. Probably none more so than the United States which now has 93 million working-aged adults no longer in the workforce!  Many of these people lost their jobs careers because their employing company moved factories overseas while others fell victim to currency manipulation or bad trade deals overly influenced by special interests not national interest concerns, yet others were replaced by technological advancements or increased burdensome government regulations and over taxation of their industry. While those possessing the least skills like laborers, construction workers and landscapers, etc. had the added slap in face as tens millions of low skilled immigrants, both legal and illegal, entered the workforce albeit much of it illegally employed off-the-books. This huge new immigrant population now sends literally hundreds of billions of dollars back to their home countries annually which furthers degrades economic vitality in the US thus further handicapping legitimate job and economic growth.

Times are changing but for many people who lost jobs, careers businesses or been replaced due to  losing or downsizing of an industry, increased automation, technological advancement or whatever reason there was no other alternative except to downsize their own personal hopes in the job market and life ambitions. The same has been true for millions of young people coming out of universities with degrees that could help to fetch them an entry level position and eventual a good life and income. Many of this upcoming working generation have had their dreams and motivations dashed and have begun to lose hope of a good future and postponed their lives to a large extent.  The day when a 4-year university degree nearly guaranteed a job and success has long since passed.

One stable option, now for several decades, for those ejected or rejected from the job market has been the alternative life and career do-over career change to an overseas ESL Teacher. Since working as an ESL teacher in remote foreign-lands most often provides one a very livable salary with free accommodations, cheap living expenses and the added adventure of living and working in a different culture and country more often than not on the other side of the planet. ESL teacher’s especially single teachers due to low living expense usually could also save a good portion of their salaries as well.

Nevertheless, ESL teaching has not been insulated from changes. As my dear mother frequently said nothing in the world is permanent. Some of the higher paying countries for ESL teaching 20-years ago were Saudi Arabia and Japan but compensation must have peaked about that time as today’s ESL salaries in those markets has slipped in real earnings for most positions and show no signs of rising in the near future with so many native English-Speakers willing and available to travel to work overseas in this hard to find a good job environment. Additionally, older ESL teachers, 58 and over, use to not have any problems finding work in most overseas markets but this has also changed. Just 15 years ago, a person without a bachelor’s degree could easily find work in countries like China and Taiwan to name just two but this has become the exception when accomplished as both of these countries have severely tightened employee visa requirements on age, education, criminal history checks, etc.  Due to worries and increase cost of health care insurance older ESL teachers often find they are either never offered a job or cannot acquire a work visa.

For many others out of job in countries like the United States, traveling to an overseas country to work as an ESL teacher is out of the question for a multitude of reasons such as separation from family and safety concerns to name just two.

However, times are changing and all changes are not negative or detrimental to employment and salary growth.  In regards to ESL teaching and teachers, teaching ESL online is becoming the knight in shining armor to both old and young ESL teachers as well other teachers and many native speakers new to teaching. Since it allows access to teaching over the internet from anywhere worldwide many people who once never could or would consider going overseas can now teach foreigners English from the comfort and safety of their living rooms.

The demand for online ESL teachers is growing exponentially as ESL online students and online companies ESL companies growth patterns skyrockets upward. Older ESL teachers have no worries since many online ESL companies have no maximum age limit and there is no visa requirement to worry about. Other ESL teachers who are often located in a country that didn’t pay well for personal reasons such as the lifestyle, culture, weather, life experience, women or whatever reason and those that worked second and third jobs find online ESL teaching much more convenient and more lucrative!

ESL students get the benefits of one and one attention professional designed step-by-step colorful lessons combined with the added convenience of not commuting to a remote classroom a big time savings positive feature of online education.

The future of online teaching especially education and teaching especially online ESL teaching could not be any brighter. The times they are a changin’!

Teaching ESL Online from Home using Singing and Rhythm

landscape-nature-man-person

One successful approach to teaching online ESL to students is thru singing and rhythm. It is remarkable how easily kids collect the words and sentences and recall them for a rather long time when singing and rhythm is included into a lesson.

Here are some comments from parents of my students I have taught in the past:

“Your style and rhythm are very suitable for my child.”

“The teaching is very good using singing to teach pronunciation.”

“This lesson is very special. I found that my child is different from before. In addition, always happy music in the classroom.”

“Teacher will use singing to guide my child to repeat. Strengthening his memory and it isn’t boring”

“The daughter of a friend’s recommendation of the teacher is really good, the content of the study in the form of singing teaching, children learn to learn in a relaxed atmosphere.”

Here are some tips for teaching vocabulary through singing to Pre-K-7 ESL students. This can be realized when teachers instruct the essential vocabulary by singing and offer visual support of this language. If that isn’t possible then just sing the vocabulary. Content area material may also be taught through singing. Choose songs which have simple lyrics and provide plenty of repetition. When teaching online ESL to students make them feel comfortable with the lyrics, their efficient filter may be lowered.

I sing anything and everything I can in the classroom. It’s funny because I’m totally not a singer. I don’t sing outside of the classroom. But singing in the classroom makes for a relaxed teaching environment and the online ESL students are having fun. The reason why I started this was that I was bored with teaching the student words. If I was bored I’m sure the students were.

Music increases online ESL students assurance with the oral creation and makes them much more eager to participate. Constant repetition of songs may also help online ESL students understand language parts and raise their fluency and pronunciation in English. Movement adds a big dimension to learning through singing. Lots of the popular children’s songs are on YouTube, and utilizing them to introduce a tune to your ESL students is helpful. You should make sure that the songs aren’t sung too quickly. Try songs such as the Hokey Pokey and Old MacDonald Had a Farm, If You Are Happy and You Know It, and Wheels on the Bus. These are outstanding samples of the usage of motion with music. Early literacy experts focus intensely on the value of singing in the classroom to support language and literacy for all young kids.

Furthermore, you must encourage the students throughout the entire class.

Great Job!

High Five!

Way to go!

That was great!

These are just a few of the thing I say in every class.
Lastly, smile a lot, laugh, and joke around with the students. This will make it fun for the kids. The main thing is your online ESL students are learning and having fun. If they are having fun and learning your booking rates will increase and then you will be smiling. Happy Teaching!

Thіѕ gаmе wоrkѕ amazingly fоr соmреtіtіvе сlаѕѕеѕ аnd rеаllу gеtѕ thе ѕtudеntѕ thinking аbоut оthеr аrеаѕ оf thе Englіѕh lаnguаgе they саn uѕе tо gеt thе роіnt. Pluѕ іt’ѕ tоnѕ оf fun.

Erаѕеr Rасеr
Thіѕ wаѕ оnе оf mу fаvоrіtе gаmеѕ tо рlау whеn I wаѕ teaching, it іѕ аn еxсіtіng board rасе gаmе thаt аll ѕtudеntѕ ѕееm tо lоvе.
Fоr this уоu wіll nееd twо bоаrd еrаѕеrѕ, рut these аgаіnѕt thе wаll орроѕіtе tо thе bоаrd. Put thе ѕtudеntѕ іntо twо tеаmѕ, lіnе thеm uр fасіng each оthеr so that thеу hаvе thе bоаrd tо thеіr rіght аnd thе еrаѕеrѕ tо thеіr lеft. Put 2 dоtѕ on thе board, оnе fоr еасh team tо еrаѕе, uѕе flаѕhсаrdѕ/асtіоnѕ rеlаtеd tо whаt уоu hаvе lеаrnt thаt day. The fаѕtеѕt gеtѕ thе роіnt.
A gооd technique to mаkіng thіѕ gаmе fаіr іѕ tо іnсrеаѕе thе ѕіzе оf thе wіnnеrѕ dоt аnd соlоr іt іn, уоu wіll еvеntuаllу еnd uр wіth сіrсlеѕ thе ѕіzе оf bеасh bаllѕ thаt thе kіdѕ have tо еrаѕе, which оf соurѕе tаkеѕ lоngеr gіvіng thе оthеr tеаm tіmе tо саtсh uр. Anоthеr twіѕt іѕ tо сhаngе thе dоtѕ/сіrсlеѕ tо funnу рісturеѕ (ріgѕ, аngrу bіrdѕ еtс).
